The Swiss engineer Alfred Buchi filed in 1905 for a patent on the equal pressure or congestion charge, and thus is considered the inventor of the turbocharger. The history of the turbocharger is therefore over 100 years old.
One of the most famous car manufacturers of turbocharged engines is the Swedish manufacturer Saab. The 1978?s Saab 99 was the first series car in the world with a working turbocharger.
The first makes the diesel
However, the first turbocharged series-road vehicle wasn?t a sports car. It was a diesel truck of the Swiss manufacturer Adolph Saurer AG, which produced trucks since 1930 with turbocharged engines. Even today, most turbo engines are diesels. Especially VW and Audi were long time pioneer with their TDI engines.
